Riga is another city with a UNESCO world heritage old town. It is a nice place, but not much different from any of the other places we have been. They have a very good museum on the occupation of Latvia though, it is a definite must see if you come here, and it is free. The Latvians certainly have had a bad time of it. Soviet occupation first started in 1939 and they only left when Germany took over during the Second World War, once the Germans had been defeated the Soviets came back and had control of the country until independence in 1991! Needless to say around a third of Latvia's population were either Killed or deported, and their normal everyday life was changed forever. There isn't much left to remind people of the soviet era, a few bunkers here or there, and some old soviet style apartment blocks, but most of it seems to have been rebuilt and Latvia is quiet up and coming.

We had a great lunch in Riga, it was in a cafeteria type place which served a ravioli type food called pelmeni, we had no idea what we were doing or what we were meant to get, so we piled our bowls with random things and after weighing them they came to 5 Lt's, about 5 pounds. Cheap, tasty and well worth trying. Other than that there wasn't much else to report on in Riga.
