This place was actually what we saw on TV that made me want to come to Portugal, so it seemed silly not to visit. The first day when we arrived the wind was blowing so much that the beach was just not worth it, i got completely sand blasted, very painful.
We were staying at a really nice hostel called the paint shop hostel, owned by a young couple who were really friendly. It had a pool table and a bar and a heap of DVD's you could watch. Since the beach was a no go, and there really wasn't anything else to do in Figueira Da Foz (pronounced Fosh) we started drinking with some of the other people staying there. There was a balance trainer there, a wooden board placed over a cylinder. This was quite challenging, but the guys there could do some tricks on it, and it kept us entertained.
We ended up getting quite drunk in the end, and decided to check out the local bars. As nothing really gets started until midnight that was when we headed out. We went to a Jazz club type of place and listened to a jazz quartet, they were quite good, but after about an hr i was getting tired and Dave was really pissed, so we headed home.
Of course we had to stop and get a burger on the way. Due to the bar tenders lack of English and my lack of Portuguese we ended up ordering two super burgers, the normal burger seems not to be a good idea, at least that is what i think she was trying to say. It took ages for these things to get cooked, Dave fell asleep, and then they came.....
These things were HUGE. Picture a dinner plate..... well thats the size it was, and we had two! I swear you could have put four macca's burgers in a circle and it would have been about the right size all for a meer 3.50. i managed to just get through half a one but somehow Dave finished the whole thing, god knows how. Not surprisingly he felt a bit sick on the way home!
Dave woke up with a massive hang over the next day, so nurse Billet gave him a few magic pills told him to sleep, and then went to the beach. The beach is huge there is about 1km of sand to walk on till you get to the water, thank god there are walk ways. the water was way to cold so i just sun baked. We went out that night and got a fantastic seafood dish which was cooked in a big copper pot, and had a lazy night watching movies.
We were going to go surfing while we were in figueria but the surf didn't end up being any good and it was quite expensive to hire boards and a wet suit, so we skipped it. Went for a quick swim and headed to Porto.
