The Brunette (Me)…..This whole thing started sometime in 2008 with some water cooler talk at work with a friend about going to Africa. She mentioned that she wanted to go….and Africa has been on the top of my travel list forever!  It's not easy to find someone to travel to half way across the world with, so as you can imagine, I was beyond excited.  Conversations continued and we decided to go in Fall 2009.

The Blonde (Andrea)….In March/April 2009, during one of our many lengthy phone calls, Andrea asked if I wanted to go to Europe with her this year and although Europe was a tempting idea, I asked her if she wanted to join in the Africa trip instead….Yes was her response without even a hint of hesitation.

Originally, the trip was planned for October, but there were some changes at work and due to the fact that we had not booked anything, I was forced to change it to September.  Amazingly we were both able to get the month of September off work.  This has worked out for the best because I’m so glad I don’t have to wait another month before we go.  My friend from work ended up not being able to its just the two of us.

Slackers….our planning started out rather slowly….actually we did almost nothing until the end of May except talk about how excited we were and some potential things we wanted to do.  We met up one weekend when Andrea was in town from San Fran and we called up our SA friends….one is notorious for not answering phone calls, but JD was willing to give us some tips and ideas of where we should go and what we should see.  There were endless options of things to do, but we narrowed it down to multiple cities in three countries.  Overall I hate planning, but as there are so many things we want to see in such a short period of time, it was necessary.

Less than a week until we leave and the trip is all I can think about, although it doesn’t feel real quite yet.  It probably won’t sink in that we are going to Africa until we land in Nairobi.  It feels like I’m 6 again, in the middle of December and I’m counting down the days until Christmas.  I LOVE South African accents and can’t wait until that is all I hear.

I loved reading about your year long looked amazing. What were some of your favorite spots. Did you do lots of planning or mostly just plan on the fly?
