Today our first stop is the castle on the hill. This is the one you always see pictures of for Salzburg.
Built in 1077 by Prince Gebhard I of Helffenstein during the investiture controversy between the German Emperor Heinrich IV and Pope Gregor.
Archbishop Gebhard was forced into exile in 1085, causing his plans to build the stronghold to be carried out by his successors. Today it is considered to be the largest fortification in Europe
You travel to the top by a funicular (we call them inclines in Pittsburgh). It travels really high, really fast. This is about my third anxiety attack due to heights so far this trip! It is really neat though, for it passes through two castle walls before arriving at the top.
