We had breakfast in the hotel today (yesterday we had a One Square Meal on the train on the way to Amsterdam). What an amazing selection! The salmon, fresh cheeses and crepes just begged to be sampled! Delicious!
Don left for work just after 8:30am and is out tonight at a function. Hopefully he will find a beer he likes. So far with the ones he's tasted it's been an endurance test rather than enjoyable.
About 10:30am I ventured out into the sun, set to explore the city a bit more and with a shopping focus this time. I needn't have rushed to get out as I found 99% of the shops were closed until at least midday (some didn't open at all). So I wandered the streets a bit further afield and by chance, found a shop selling marimekko products
I found a book shop that had a reasonable selection of kid's books - funny to see some of the favourite authors at school (Eric Carle, David Walliams, Andy Griffiths, Shaun Tan etc) on the bookshelf in another language. Didn't see any Margaret Mahy or Lynley Dodd ones though!
I also found a couple of Cook shops - think TFE, but on a much bigger scale. Probably a good thing my suitcase was fairly full when we arrived! I somehow doubt I will be doing much personal clothing shopping- nothing has leaped out at me so far and the € exchange rate means I will have to really like something before I would buy it. But then again there was a pair of boots that I saw....and the shop was closed today.
I was brave with lunch and chose a wee cafe (De Witte Ballons) whose outside advertising was in Dutch. I could make out panini and hamburger so thought I should be ok. I ended up having a yummy smoked chicken salad with cashews and an avocado dressing - and an espresso ofcourse! Delicious (€10.85).
Lots more walking today. The biking still fascinates me. There's so many of them and they all appear quite calm and as if they have all the time in the world (while they avoid pedestrians and cars)
I'm surprised that people don't wear hats and gloves (and warmer clothes in some cases!). I'm finding it very cold. Today the high was 10, but we had more sun so it felt warmer.
I'm getting better at walking on the right hand side. Habits of a lifetime take a while to break! I walked through Utrecht Central train Station at 5pm tonight. I knew that I couldn't stop or I would get mowed down! I thought I walked fast but gosh some of these folk can move!
It's been great to talk to both the girls in the last 24hrs. Thanks to the friends who helped make Rachel's birthday special by getting in touch with her etc. Hannah's exciting news is that she has been chosen for the Otago Univ Women's rowing 8 again and another trip to China looks imminent.
Tonight I got takeaways for tea - noodles and some frites (I've been eyeing them up since we arrived!)
