Where are the Turtles?

Our final few days in Playa Grande where filled with surfing, swimming, homework, and relaxing.  I  managed to get in 2 surf sessions a day (wonderful surf all week) while still getting in a full day's work.  It is amazing how we can be so far from home, but can still be in touch with work as if at home in Maine.  Conference calls with teammates, customers, etc.

Sawyer and Hunter also did a lot of surfing this week.  They also spend a lot of time in the pool and have "school" everyday during the height of the heat/sun.  The boys have become quite good at ping-pong.  Everyone has time to read and relax.  Pace of life is slow in Playa Grande.

The big event for the week was our help with the endangered leatherback turtle.  It is one of the largest in the world, so you would think they would be easy to spot.  Playa Grande is a critical location for these 100+million old creatures to lay eggs.  The females can lay up to 100 eggs in a "clutch".  After about 50 days they hatch (at night) and the little guys scramble to the water (always at high tide).  There is a national park here in Playa Grande that protects the beach.  You cannot go on the beach at night (without the rangers), no buildings on the shore (lights and noise mess up the turtles).  We got a nice education on these creatures then waited for "spotters" to find either a mama or hatching little ones.  Unfortunately none showed up as we were on the tail end of the season.  Still - we got a great education, saw their habitat and helped by picking up some trash to protect their habitat.

We met some wonderful people at Playa Grande Inn.  Within a few days we felt like regulars, playing music, playing poker and partying at an impromptu concert featuring a popular punk bank (NOFX).

Hanging out in the surf "line-up", laughing about antics from the night before - felt very home-like.

We will come back to Playa Grande again some day for sure!
