Today was our first big day in NY as we had lots planned including a football game and an overnight stay in the city at the Pod Hotel.
After catching 3 different trains, we found ourselves at the new home of the New York Jets, the New Meadowlands Stadium. It was an awesome sight. It seemed like it was out in the middle of a giant field and the train dropped us off just outside the door to the huge arena. Our seats were quite high up in the stands but we had a great view of the game. If only the AFL was set up this well. We had cup holders for our beer in plastic bottles, there were huge screens everywhere, there was commentary miked up so we could keep track of what was happening, rock music was cranking during the game, cheerleaders performed routines at half-time, and when there was a touchdown scored, smoke came out of the tops of the huge screens. It was like a rock concert mixed with a football game. A much more entertaining experience than I have had at a sporting event so far. In the end, the NY Jets thumped the Buffalo Bills (yay!) and they secured a spot in the play-offs. As soon as the game was over, the arena filled up with explosions of confetti and smoke. It felt like a real event to be at the game.
Right after the game me and Nik caught the train into the city, right in the heart of NYC, near Times Square. We wandered into Times Square which was an amazing sight, all of the neon lighting was incredible. After a while in the city, we went and checked into our hotel. It was a funky little place called the Pod Hotel. The room was tiny (like a little pod) and the clear glass shower was overlooking the bed which was interesting. The whole room wasn't much bigger than a double bed space. It somehow managed to fit in a small kitchen and bedside table though.
After we had settled in and dropped some things in the room we went out for another look at the city.
This time we went to Central park and took a romantic horse and cart ride through the dark and snowy park. We also wandered around, checking out lots of famous buildings and went to have a look at the ice skating at Rockefeller Center and the giant Christmas tree there. It seems that even though Christmas is well and truly over, the city of NY is still very much in the Xmas spirit. There is so much Christmas lighting up that it feels very much like Xmas still.
Eventually, we went and had a late tea at a nice Italian restaurant and then finally to an irish bar for some cocktails before bed. We had walked for miles today so were so exhausted and in need of some rest.
