I must be a sucker for punishment cos I am feeling like i need to work or something. Started my new volunteer job in the beautiful cloud forest of Baeza, on the edge of the jungle in Northern Ecuador. Working at the Magic Roundabout. My role is kinda mixed. I am the Chef for everyone (scary thought, considering i havent cooked for anyone, let alone myself, in over 4mths) and decorator.
This is such a beautiful place, situated high up on a hill, and i do mean very high. It takes about 10mins to climb and alot of air. The clouds sit so low you cant even see out of our bunkhouse in the mornings. Big verandahs of the main house overlook the mountains and volcano and it is way too easy to sit in the comfy hammocks and not do anything at all, all day long.
You forget how simple life can and is still is some parts of the world and i totally love the fact that it is here. There is no phone or net. The vegie man comes past once a week, so does the meat man. They toot their horns and we bolt down the hill. If you go into town the produce markets are on in a dirty carpark once a week, depending on if the locals got paid or not and you carry everything in a costello (big sack).
To get around you hitch in the back of cattle and vegie trucks and if it rains the roads slip away and you have to wait a few days for them to get restored before you can go into town again. I dont really need anything else than this.
Am living with two Canadians, Brad and Vincenzo (from Quebec) the 3 of us get along really well and cook up massive feasts together. the only downside is the open bar we have at our disposal. Oh and the fact that, as much as i love living in the forest, i am the clumiest of beings ever invented. I cant even climb slippery rocks and cliffs to waterfalls without stacking it several times and ending up with the biggest bruises on me.
Also machetties do not agree with me at all. Only a couple of injuries but am working on making myself more environmentally friendly.
