Juju picked me up at my house around 6:30 pm on Friday night. He was accompanied by his friend Matteo (One of the few Caucasians who reside in Luanda) and Matteo's girlfriend. The four of us loaded up into his '92 Nissan Pathfinder (excellent surfing vehicle)... and headed out, jamming to some American rap songs we picked up from a local radio station on his boom box/car stereo. Juju speaks excellent English and Matteo speaks just a little, so I at least had some people to communicate with. We ventured south, which I could only verify from his onboard compass, to a fellow surfers house. We picked him up, reorganized the luggage, added a surfboard to the roof rack, and then we were on the next two check points - adding two more cars to our caravan.
It was pitch black throughout the whole drive and I wondered how we planned to even set up camp... yet, I was the only who seemed to be worried and was quick to let my worries go. After two hours, we arrived at the surf haven Cabo Lado (cab - o laid - o) and were greeted by an extremely bright full moon. After all the gear was moved to the beach and all the tents were set up, we joined some of Juju's friends who had a fire already built. ...to note... Its really nice to not have the regulations of such countries as the USA where you cannot drive your vehicle or build a fire on the beach unless it is a 'designated' area.
For dinner, we had a Brazillian BBQ. Following it, we had a couple drinks and socialized; I played my guitar a little, and had to eventually retire for the evening. Juju said he was sleeping on the beach (not in a tent) so I found myself a nice spot on the sand and was out cold - long day for the working man.
