Dublin on Foot
Entry 32 of 35 | show all | print this entry |
In hindsight, I think a lot of us would have said that tacking Dublin on the end of this trip wasn't entirely necessary. I was really happy to get to experience the city, from end to end on foot and top the whole day off with a rousing experience in the city's pubs.
I think we saw most of what Dublin had to offer, but that took a toll on our legs and feet. We walked a lot. And unfortunately, we didn't really have a lot of background on what we were seeing. Dad walked around reading out of the guidebook so we got a little knowledge (and a lot of embarassment on my part : ))from that.
I think highlights included the statue of Oscar Wilde, the visit to Trinity College, and touring the Guiness Brewery. Some of the beauty of Trinity College was removed by the fact that they were preparing for their spring ball that evening. This entailed having large tents, fences, and lorries in almost all of the main quads. We did view the Book of Kells and see an awesome library (almost as good as Duke Humphrey's) there. We treked out to the Guiness Brewery at my request and had an interesting tour there, although it was more Guiness propaganda and marketing than anything else. Buy hey, you did get a pint of Guiness and a great vew of Dublin when you were done. We strolled back along the river and by the time we got to the Temple Bar area we were too tuckered out to really enjoy it.
I think the way we ended the night was ideal. We cabbed it to a strip of pubs not too far from our hotel...first ate great pub food...fish and chips, Uncle Arthur's Casserole, in one and then listened to some Irish music. We first heard just one guy singing and playing guitar. He was a little lackluster, but still pleasant to listen to. We moved across the street for a few minutes at the end of the night so dad could catch the impromtu performance of about six or seven Irish musicians on a variety of instruments. The pub was incredibly crowded and the music un-miked...so we just made do with ten minutes or so before hitting the hay. It was a great end to the trip.
