The London Bus Tour - Take Two
Entry 29 of 35 | show all | print this entry |
Miraculously, the clouds parted on Sunday and we were left with a beautiful day to explore London. The problem with London is that you could easily spend a week there and still not have seen a lot of what there is to do and see. Left with only a day, it's nearly impossible to know where to begin. When Hadley was visiting we solved this dilemma by taking the hop-on/hop-off bus tour throughout the city. By sitting at the top of the open-topped bus you get a terrific view as you wind around the city and you can get off at whichever sights you wish to see. Although the tube is cheaper, it's just not as fun to spend most of your day underground.
So, we decided to have a go at the bus and it was a great decision. We decided to visit the Tower of London at some point during the day, but we had a great time taking in the sights and sounds of London along the way. We jumped off at Marble Arch to catch a glimpse of Speaker's Corner in action. We were duly impressed with the multiple orators vying for our ears on subjects from Islam to the environment. The speakers included what I think we would all call a true "preacher" who was emphatically spreading the word for all to hear.
We jumped off the bus as well at Picadilly Circus and walked our way down to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. We peaked in at some Van Gogh's and Monet's, but that is one museaum where it is entirely too easy to while away the hours. The bus took us by Westminster and over the Thamses, down Fleet Street and by St. Paul's. It's alway great to take this route by bus. I remember walking all that way with Casey in November. We made a stop at Tower Bridge for some photo opportunities and then began the tour of the Tower of London. The beefeaters were at their usual bawdy best and we took in the beautiful crown jewels
As you've probably seen the highlight of a trip for me is usually the food and today was no exception. We managed to find a well-reviewed Anatolian restaurant, just near the Globe Theater. There was much debate about where Anatolia is actually located, but we all agreed with the reviewer that the food was fantastic! There was an after dinner jog to catch the bus back towards Kensington, but it was altogether a fabulous day in London!
