After weeks of wonderful hospitality it was time to say goodbye to ouma and set off on our excursion around SA. We started with a 15 hour bus trip straight from cape town to port elizabeth- a valentine's gift that proves romance is not dead. The next morning we hired a car, a classic golf (known as a chico) equipped with all the mod cons- gearbox, windows and even an alarm (which took a while for poor ludditic josh to disengage, much to lauren's embarrasment!). We headed off to Addo Elephant park, originally a sanctuary for elephants from the hands of poachers, but now one of south africa's largest conservation parks. It is home to over 300 elephants, and after driving in, setting off the car alarm and then making a quick exit, we headed to a waterhole where we chanced upon close to a hundred elephants- it was absolutely spectacular! So class to see them up close, every age represented, moving in large family groups, some drinking, some playing, some just standing- int' elephants brilliant big bigger biggest!
big bigger biggest!
. Running in and out of their feet were loads of warthogs, which are some pof the funniest looking animals around. Carrying on we caught a glimpse of a lynx, then some more elephants, this time from a hide where you can get out of the car. After lunch we saw zebra, a buffalo within reaching distance of the car, plent yof buck, startled a kudu, just beside the road, and then headed to a watering hole right at the top of the park. We could see a few bull elephants around the water and edged our car towards them. Then suddenly to the right of the car there was this massive head, within 2 metres of our car. Lauren almost wet herself and we moved quickly out of the way before the massive bull elephant trotted annoyedly to the water.
A great day, special to see animals in a very natural environment and i just loved the elephants!.
