Route: Green Island - Ferry Boat - Fugang - Taitung ( by bus ) - Taipei ( by train )
Total Distance: 0 km
Altitude: 0m

So - my W A L K is nearing its end for the time being.

I have beakfast in the ' Breakfast and Beautiful Shop ' as the previous day. Wow, now I have to decide whether still to continue to Orchid Island ( Lanyu ), a somewhat neighboring island of Green Island. I have already checked that there is no ship connecting the two islands, so not allowing a round tour. What's on the pro side? Seeing another island with aboriginal population / All major islands are part of my around the island walk / Weather and sea seem fine for now / I am as close by as I can be. On the contra side is that I am a bit tired / the weather is too hot to walk / just another island - I would perhaps enjoy more on another trip. I postpone my decision and let the ferry boat situation help - to Lanyu on same day after I arrive in Fugang harbor in Taichung, I will go and vice versa ( I could also take a small plain from Taichung airport )

The young couple from the Taiwanese restaurant arrives for their breakfast just when I am about to leave. We sit together for a short while and I learn that they are from Kaoshiung and that they decided to go and live on Green island bacause he loves fishing and she likes the ocean. He also takes people on fishing trips, either from the beach or from a boat - so contact them in their small restaurant painted in orange color.

I go to buy the NTD 400 ticket and wait for the boat to sail into the harbor. Although it is Tuesday, still a lot of people around. It is so hot, I have to look for a shadow. On the ferry boat I find a small place on a kind of balcony beside the captain's cabin. Here I am totaly alone, enjoy the sun and the fresh breeze blowing around me, see Green island slowly disappearing in the mist and a bit later the contours of the Taiwan mainland. From my position I can see the flying fish escaping from the nearing boat by flying very low over the water surface, splashing a bit of water when touching the small waves with their bellies and then diving elegantly into the deep water, repeating this again and again. It is an interesting spectacle to see in live - I have seen the caught flying fishes, I have seen them smoked and have even eaten them, but seeing them perform their acrobatics inthe open sea, this is even greater.

The decision is made for me: No ship to Lanyu today and tomorrow is not certain as the weather report has announced fog, rain and strong winds.

Back home to Taipei for the summer/ heat break!

I go to Chiao Yelio ( the smaller sister of the similar stone structure in the North of Taiwan. ). Here I eat all my favorites -  frozen Buddha Head fruit  and  Lo Shen Hua flower ice cream ( a red flower with a light sour/sweat taste ). I also buy dried Bolomi ( also a fruit ), dried small fishes and Moa Dchi ( sticky rice with fillings ). While I so eat my ice cream  I suddenly hear a sceam and a man makes a record breaking jump. Instantly the next loud noise of a drainage cover falling to the ground follows. What happened? Everyone is looking and some people ( including me )  move towards the man, who is standing there pale in his face: A pretty long and fat snake is lying in the drainage - dead as it turns out, probably the snake dropped dead when facing the screaming man.

I take the bus to the train station and buy the NTD 800 ticket to Taipei. The train leaves punctual ( 3:25 pm ) and stops quite frequently between Taitung and Hualien - this time from the train I revisit all the places I have just visited a week earlier when 'doing' all the four cross ways. The Inner Rift Valley is really beautiful with its own charm. The mountains on both sides, especially the Central Mountain Range towering majestically on the left side. Rice paddies with their light green plants covering like an elegant carpet the whole valley, interrupted only by palm trees, pineapple fields and aboriginal villages. The evening sun covers the whole scenery in wonderful colors.  We cross wide river beds filled only with very small streams - for now, but in Typhoon time the river beds will fill up with roaring floods, carrying with then mud, stones, large bolders and whole trees from the mountains.

Till Hualien an exceptional tall local older man sits beside me and we talk a bit. He is on his way to Hualien to visit his son.  From Hualien to Yilan I have no neighbor and from Yilan to Taipei a young man sits beside me. He is very friendly. When he talks I small betel nuts and really, after a short while he takes out a pack of betel nuts and begins to chew. He smiles at me and offers me a betel nut, which I can avoid, saying: " Taiwan chewing gum".

At 9:00 pm we arrive in Taipei main station! Short bus ride and

" Honey, I'm home ! "

Please see a few photos of our summer activites like mountain hiking and stream hiking ( tracing ) in the next few entries.
