Today I went with the International Student Network to Deutschland for the Düsseldorf Christmas market. We left Amsterdam on a bus early in the morning and arrived in Düsseldorf after noon and were left to explore the Christmas market. I expected a large market in the middle of a big town square, but there were actually many medium sized markets spread out over the city center.

What else do you do at a Christmas market besides eat a ton of good food and peruse the vendors? That's precisely what we did. I first ate a Bratwurst because it's a typical German treat. As I said before about eating Haggis, I'm a really picky eater. I loved the bratwurst, though! At another vendor I got some mozzarella sticks, because I was still a little hungry.

At that point I was planning on not eating anymore, but I happened upon a vendor making Nutella crêpes. As a rule, I never turn down Nutella anything. I wasn't let down either, it was really good.

After that, we walked to a part of the city along the Rhine River and got to see great views of the Rheinturn and the Theodor Heuss Bridge. Düsseldorf is quite modern because much of the city was bombed during the two world wars. In fact, many of the Old Town's historic buildings are actually reconstructions following old plans of buildings that were bombed.

We got some mulled wine at another vendor, which I didn't really care for. It was too strong for me. It was nice to have a hot drink to warm up, though. Because I failed to drink a German beer in Berlin, I knew I had to get one in Düsseldorf, so we got some Pilsners in a small bar before heading back to the bus.

I thought the Christmas market was really neat, but I do wish I would have found some nicer Christmas ornaments to send as Christmas presents. All of the ornaments I saw were really tacky. There's a Christmas market on Leidseplein in Amsterdam, so I'm going to try much luck searching there.
