I remember reading about this experiemental project and now we have the opportunity to go into this unique structure that was sealed off for two years with eight scientists inside. Biosphere 2, a three acre complex of futuristic domes and glass canopies was built as an experiment designed to see how man would function in a colony on another planet.
Eight people lived in this isolation for two years. They grew their own food, tended to more than 3500 plant and animal species, and recycled their water.
The complex was divided among five miniature ecosystems: desert, grassland, marsh, ocean, and rain forest
Many of the ecosystems have deteriorated. It was an exhausting job, as you were responsible for the food on the table, along with the constant scientific experiements. It's an unusual complex, and one worth touring. Who knows, this might be the model for the first space station on the moon.
Back on the road to Phoenix and just in time to meet Kary and John's flights. Check in to the hotel then over to Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin West house and studio. We're Frank fanatics. May have something to do with the "Wright" name, which I inherited from my grandfather Lew.
Architecture always interested me since I was a child. Could it be we share some of the same genes? We've got our tickets and picked up umbrellas. Not for the rain, but the sun. The tour is thru the house, gardens, past the pool and into his private theatre with perfect acoustics. Frank had many of his students stay in tents on the property to help build this masterpiece. To say he was economical would be an understatement. This house, like most he has built, flows. I love Falling Water, but would take this beauty in a heart beat.
A quick trip into downtown Scottsdale, then back to Phoenix. Dinner at Guarduno's. We found this restaurant in New Mexico years ago, and loved it. Not much has changed. Still a favorite.
