June 4 Lima airport to hotel
Entry 1 of 14 | show all | print this entry |
Day 1 We arrived at Lima airport at 11:10pm. I now know what a hamster feels like in a maze. Down the stairs to a long wide hallway. Immigration, custom and other signs are hanging form the ceiling. You're pushed into a line, 4 to 5 parallel lines are forming beside you. Your thoughts are do we go to customs or immigration first and which line should we be in. An airport employee is insight. Ask the question and you are told stay in line. You also would like to use the bathroom facilities, but if you're like us, we are pushed into the line farthest away from the facilities, and there is no cutting thru lines to get there. Keep shuffling down the hallway. Stop start, stop start. After what seems forever, the front is in sight. Now you, and all of the other six lines are directed to other lines. Some from each line join to form a new line. Then this line goes to another line, and when you get to the front, the crowd control dividers are changed to form new lines. Of course everyone is grumbling, but you just suck it up knowing the end is somewhere in the next line. Make sure your immigration paper that was given to you on the plane is completed and ready to hand to the officer, once you get into that line. Security checks are interesting. After immigration, you are in line to press a button. Green means go right thru, you and your luggage are ready to leave the airport. I pressed the button and it turned red. Which means we hauled our bags thru to an extra area, put them thru the scanner and now were ready to leave the area. When you get thru security the bathrooms are waiting for you. All tour companies are standing right outside security - but inside the airport. Go straight. Find your tour company, most will have your name on their sign. DO NOT turn right and leave the airport building because you will not be permitted back in. Your driver will take you to an area to wait while he gets his car. Then you are off on a 20 - 35minute ride. Experienced drivers know the shortcuts. These are usually thru questionable neighborhoods. But you get to the hotel a little earlier. Everyone in Peru drives over the speed limit (if one actually does exist). The driver was trying to point out the high lights such as the Pacific Ocean and parks you cannot see in the dark. Interesting to know the areas are there to see in the daylight, and I think he was trying to practice his English with us. We learnt that many Peruvians are trying to master our language to increase their earnings. It's an easy way to help them. We checked into the Antara Hotel in Milaflores at 1:00am. Staff was wonderful, and within 5 minutes we were tucked into bed. Loved the hotel. Hated the 5am noise. If we were on a higher floor we probably wouldn't have heard it. All rooms have Jacuzzis. We had a suite with a sauna and larger Jacuzzi. Weren't in the room long enough to enjoy either.
