Bonjour!
Well it's been a busy few days. The second day of sightseeing we went to see the Louvre (a HUGE art museum). I'm not kidding when I say huge, this thing is a few football fields long with many stories. We probably didn't get to see all of it, but we saw a lot of it I'm sure. It was all very famous artwork (sculptures, paintings, artifacts) from different civilizations. Kerry was able to get a lot of pictures and info to use in his classroom! The most famous thing we saw there was the Mona Lisa. Later that day we went to another museum with mostly Impressionist paintings and sculptures from Monet and Van Gogh. After that we went and saw an Egyptian Spire that was given to Paris by Egypt. It was huge with a lot of heiroglyphics on the outside. In the evening, we went out to see Arc De Triumph (spelling?). We actually climbed to the top of it to see a beautiful 360 degree view of Paris at night. Another cool thing we got to do was an hour long river cruise at night along the Seine River. It went under a billion bridges and we really got a feel for where all the big sights to see in Paris are. We chose to sit outside which made it a super cold experience, but worth it for the views.
Yesterday we went to Disneyland Paris-It was a 45 minute train ride but we made it there on time for opening. The hours are different here (only open 10-7). We got a hopper pass which meant we could go between Disneyland and this other park called Walt Disney Studios. The other park only had a few big rides (Tower of Terror, our favorite Aerosmith rollecoaster from Disney World, and this new one called Crush Coaster where it takes you on the underwater Australian current). Disneyland was similar but didn't have as many rides as Disneyland in California. Some of rides are very similar, but some are very different too. Space Mountain went upside-down a couple of times!! Indiana Jones was pretty cheap. But overall, it was a fun day. We closed the day by getting some food at Planet Hollywood in Downtown Disney. It was a nice change to get some food we're used too =).
Today, we took the train to the Palace of Versailles. We really wish we had the weather channel on our TV because it got pretty bad today. We started out roaming around the palace gardens first. After we got pretty far out to see a small farming village, we got slightly disoriented. By the time we realize what happened, we were outside of the palace walls, tromping through the mud, in pouring rain which included hail at some points. It was pretty bad. We just kept going though and found our way back. When we arrived back at the palace, we looked pretty disheveled and muddy. After that whole episode, we went in the palace and saw just how magnificent it was. Our view was probably a little tainted just because we were slightly cranky at this point. ;)
After getting back to Paris, I went and took a nap in our hotel room since I was tired and am experiencing some sniffles. Kerry kept on going and went to see Napolean's tomb, Rodin Museum (where the famous "Thinker" sculpture is), and the National Armory. He tried to see the Catacombs but they are under construction at the moment. He was able to get a small nap in after that.
Now we're going to go to the grocery store for some food to take on our trek to Normandy tomorrow. We are going to be renting a car. We had hoped to get one in a suburb, but they're all rented out because of the holiday weekend. So, we pick the car up at the station across the street from our hotel...which is convenient...but that means Kerry has to drive in the middle of Paris traffic. It will definitely be an adventure! Luckily our car will have GPS if we pay the extra 12 Euros. =) Pray that everything goes well tomorrow! We are excited for the chance to get out of the city on our own and to see where Kerry's grandpa landed on D-Day.
Maybe I'll get a chance to blog again before we leave to go home.
Miss you guys!!
Kerry and Kathy
