Day 2 on Koh Phangan was Friday. See, I love my 8 weeks in Thailand because I get everything: I've had the hard work, the waking up at 6 am everyday, actually giving something back to this country with volunteering for WFFT. I've had a lot of culture and big cities but I'm going to have more with Chang Mai and Bangkok. But right now really is the beachy, islandy holiday. It's a nice holiday where I consider taking a shower and eating a banana pancake before noon "accomplishments."
That's what I did Friday morning. Then I picked up my laundry and helped everyone plan the evening's BBQ. Sebastian, the owner of The Last Resort, was organizing us into a BBQ that night. I only had to pay half price, since I was only going to be eating the veggie side dishes.
After that I went next door to the resort and checked email and facebook and then got a wonderful neck and shoulder massage at the resort's spa
I took that opportunity to go sit in the restaurant and order soup, since it got a little chillier. Really wonderful vegetable noodle soup with lots of cilantro on top (Mom, you would have loved it with the cilantro).
I was trip-planning with my LP (Lonely Planet guidebook) and had just called Abby (my friend who lives as a scuba instructor on Koh Tao, the next island) and left her a message. The phone rang again and I thought it would be her calling back, but it was Jess and Pooja!
Jess and Pooja went to Northwestern with me. Pooja's been living in San Francisco since we graduated, so I'd see her every few weeks. Jess I haven't seen since graduation, but she and I do have a funny history: freshman year, there was a student who wrote for The Daily Northwestern and had to write an article on dating. The writer took two of her girl friends to Homer's ice cream shop in Wilmette and found two boys to be in a picture with them.
Anyway, so Jess and Pooja have been also on a big trip around South East Asia, and they are current in Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, just like me. We had realized this ages ago, probably in the winter, and had planned to meet up. They had previously passed by my hostel and wanted to come back and hang out, so we all met up and had some drinks in the bar area.
By the time they left, the BBQ was starting, so I just stayed down in my beach clothes for all that. Some fun Irish guys had came over too, and there was more hanging out with all the Brits that are staying in other bungalows at TLR, as well as Simon, Magdalena and Barbara.
As the night went on, we drank sangria and played a lot of Spoons--an exciting card game that you usually play with spoons, but we played 1) with straws, 2) with touching our noses when we had gotten all 4 cards, and 3) with running to the other side of the room to grab a straw
Around midnight, everyone was going to the beach again, but I declined. I didn't want to be around it if it was similar to the night before. (Later, the girls told me that it was much better--more dancing, less people being idiots).
Still, I was happy to go to bed, even if I had to be woken up at 4 am by Sebastian (the owner) screaming at one of the guys renting a bungalow to pack up his %$#% and leave (the guy apparently had been not treating his girlfriend right and Sebastian didn't like it. But see what I mean how people act when they're on holiday here and drunk all the time?)

. It was an hour long and a discounted price... very relaxing. After that, I figured I could sit by the pool (since it was right there...) which I did for a while, but then it began raining. I took that opportunity to go sit in the restaurant and order soup, since it got a little chillier. Looking out at ocean/pool
One of those boys happened to be my brother, who was in high school at the time. Later, I see this picture in the paper, so I find those two girls one day in the dining hall and tell them that they pretended to be on a date with my teenage brother. One of those girls was Jess. . The third way proved way too dangerous, so it was quickly aborted. Around midnight, everyone was going to the beach again, but I declined.
