Short update, as I am sipping a Mai Tai and soon want to focus 100% on that :)  One fun thing about Thailand is that their internet cafes are also bars, which are also restaurants and coffee shops and guest houses sometimes... so Liz and I have drinks right now while we're checking email/updating blogs.

That conglomeration also happens sometimes in restaurants.  I'd say about half the time here, I eat really good Thai food, but the vegetarian options are sometimes limited.  So the other half I eat western food.  Their 'western food' restaurants sometimes are combined Thai/Italian/Indian etc affairs, so last night for dinner I had some veggie pizza (Italian), a croissant with nutella (what... French?), and a mango lassi <yogurt> shake (Indian), just because I could.  Different cuisines, but they're all offered simultaneously.  Love it.

Driving from Krabi to Ao Nang

It rained a bit last night, so we didn't wander around too much.  This morning I got up and went to breakfast solo--Liz was still asleep--and I love going to breakfast alone, with a book.  So quiet; so peaceful.  We found the 'bus' that took us to Ao Nang, a much more beachier town than Krabi.  (wait--before I forget-- while I was gone, Liz began packing and then found a five inch long scorpion on the floor next to her bag.  No joke.  She hastened to go get one of the proprietresses of the guest house, who came running with a flip flop, and killed it.  I heard the story and saw the remains when I got back.  It was disgusting!  That's scary--our window was closed; I have no idea how it got in.  Just don't think about it....)

A moment on Krabi--it's a town that has a lot of restaurants and bars, some great night markets, and is right on the river.  It's not a huge tourist town, which is sort of nice, and it is a great jumping off point for lots of tours, like the river rafting/hot springs ones that we did.  I also noticed something--there's a definitely dearth of old western man/younger Thai women couples.  Everywhere else I've gone, that vision has been very blatant, and sometimes it's creepy.  I sort of unconsciously judge each white man-asian woman couple I see, because chances are, it's not genuine (unless I see cute half-asian/half-white children trailing behind them, in which case, I have to assume it's a real relationship and not purely a financial deal) View from our guest house room!!

.  Anyway, Krabi was lovely, but now we're in Ao Nang.

We tried to get to J Mansion, which is supposedly a superb guest house, but it was booked (and it's low season!).  So we did what worked for us last time--crossed the street and found something else.  We're staying at Jinda Guest House right now, which is decent.  It's slightly more money than the last place, but it also gives us our own bathroom, toilet paper, towels, a tv, a refrigerator, and hot water for the shower (my first in a month!)

After settling a bit, we went and got some good Thai food and then headed to the beach.  I took some really pretty pictures, but as my camera cord doesn't exactly fit into my 'going out' purse, I can't upload them right now.  The beach was nice, though I cowered under the shade of a tree after a brief swim in the sea--the sun was murderously hot.  The temp was in the 90s but "real feel" was 103, in addition to humidity.

However, the real fun part of today was the shopping!  I found some nice presents for people as well as a top, a really pretty dress (that I can wear in both my Thai life and my real life), and some wonderful short stretchy cute pants.  I love bargaining now!  We're heading out for more drinks and food, so bye for now, and pictures will come later.  :)

love,
Katie
