Immediately as I got off the train at Bologna's central station the heat hit me like a forceful wind. Amsterdam had been so refreshing averaging in the 70's/80's with periodic rain cooling things off. Back in Italy and boy is it sweltering, or I just need to acclimate to the heat once again! I made my way to the tourist info office to pick up an accomodation guide. Now a decision had to be made, do I stay in the city and spend a little more money on lodging or do I stay in the countryside having to bus it in each day? Well I was opting for the bus ride thinking it couldn't be that bad, even though the reviews I read were not encouraging. I quickly made my way to the bus stop not wanting to miss bus #68, which only came every 2 hours. As I am sitting there waiting all of the sudden I look at the number on the bus as it zips by, not even slowing down, without even a toot of the horn, my bus is gone!
Ah, now picture this... I am sitting there pouring with sweat because its blazing hot, I have my 40 lb pack and 5 lb purse weighing me down and the bus I need to have boarded doesn't even glance my way!!! Ok, plan B and such a better option. I found the cheapest hotel in the central train station area, walked there within 10mins, checked in and now have my own room (although no A/C so sweltering) but at least I don't have to rely on shitty public transportation! A little on the pricy side, but its not a hostel and well within walking distance to everything, plus it will be easy to make my 7am train to Florence on Friday!
Well I took a refreshing cold shower, and a slight nap, then plunged back out into the heat to get a better look at the city of Bologna. Small winding streets, wonderful hues of mustard yellow and burnt sienna buildings, gelato stands and cafes covered every corner. I made my way to the center of town, Piazza Maggiore, and found a venue being set up. Seems I arrived just in time for a 4-day concert series starting today. Music and dance every evening, this should be even better than I thought!
Having a good sense of my surroundings, I headed back to my room for another cold shower and some much needed sleep. Tomorrow would be a full hot day and I would start it off with a jog up the longest portico in the world!
