Brugge or Bruegger(brew-ger) as the locals pronounce, is a small quiet town at night, yet bustling and lively during the day. The main area of Brugge is a square surrounded by the clock tower, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The evening that Joshua and I arrived, we were unknowingly greeted by a special concert. The concert was part of the Brugge celebration for their Flemish independence from France. We were initially enticed by the fact that Joshua thought it was Andrea Bocelli signing onstage, yet as time corrected these assumptions, we began to sing along to "Country Roads Take Me Home." As the entertainment continued, we were amused by the fact that the whole crowd knew the "YMCA", and so we partook in the Village People's four alphabet gestures that are apparently famous. During our dancing efforts, we struck up conversation with a very kind retired couple(Reggae Rod and Carol) from Connecticut, and their fun-loving, quirky friend, Stephen. We were later invited over to Stephen's house in Brugge to enjoy his Belgium beer on tap, and canal side terrace. As it turns out, Steven is a CEO of a Russian oil company, and his house in Brugge is one of a handful of properties that he owns, along with a ski-resort in Austria. Reggae Rod was a member of the US Olympic Ski Team from 1967 to 1971, and a National Downhill Champion in 1970. Joshua and I were equally blown away by their personal bios and humorous stories that they had shared. This whole experience in Brugge was definitely one of the highlights of our European trip.
