October 12th is celebrated as the Dia de la Cultura here, when Christobal Colon first arrived. Thus, it is a great excuse for the Ticos to party and what better place to do it than Limon, the Caribbean port city where Columbus landed? Jess and I both left work early Friday to take the bus (3 hours) to Limon. Our hotel was smack in the middle of Carnaval - perfect for our purposes (i.e.: do everything besides sleep...). We went to bed so late (or should I say early) each day and got up after only a few hours of sleep (after all, Carnaval doesn't sleep) to go to the beach for a few hours before returning to the chaos of Carnaval each afternoon. Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera (although in retrospect it probably would have been fine) because I didn't want to have it stolen, so I have no pictures to share :(. Saturday was the biggest day, with a parade and a big concert at night. Monday was a national holiday and I didn't have to work, so a few of us headed down the coast to Puerto Viejo to relax and recuperate on the beach there for a day. I was quite sunburned and soo tired, but very happy upon return to Piedades! What a weekend!
