i stayed at mix hostel.. it's very cheap, the cost was 20 yuan a night for a 4 bed dorm, it has cheaper 6 bed ones too.. The place was recommended by Kate of the previous entry fame.. It is a bohemian, hippy, rasta, incense stick, writing on the Walls kind of place with a Tibetan flavour, which is the closest thing I'll be getting to the country now as the Chinese have put the place on lock down to foreigners (Chinese not incl.)
Went to panda place without any directions back as i forgot the useful flyer mix hostel gives out with instructions in chinese for taxi drivers, i managed to get a helpful shop worker to write down the name of the north railway station and could walk back from there but was bricking it for a minute as not many taxis speak english.. It was great fun watching the pandas.. I feel the red ones aren't as liked as much as i was alone watching them, my g/f thinks they look like teddy bears. i spent ages just staring into the eyes of the big black and white adults trying to imagine what they interpret the many faces and bright flashes coming from the other side of the wall just a couple of metres away, i think they fall into the lazy animal category with koalas and sloth monkeys.. it looks like a good life.
1,000 yuan, which is about a hundred pound is the asking price at the centre if you want to handle a panda cub for 2-3 minutes. .I was looking forward to doing it but was pretty gutted when told the price.. If you have the money it could be quite a memorable and special few minutes which goes to helping the centre run..
In the early morning I thought I'd take advantage of the electric blankets that are on the beds of the hostel.. I washed my underwear and socks and placed them under my duvet to get heated and dry before I leave for my 7:20pm train to Guilin.. At 6 I returned from wandering the streets to find that the only thing that had changed was that the wetness had spread to all the bed and my clothes were slightly warmer..
Met afew travellers who all had a cold that had been going round like wild fire in the hostel.. It didn't take long for me to succumb.. It put a bit of a downer to the town to me and didn't bother to get to the large Buddha or the gauge trek because I've been dreaming of warmer climates..
