Where I stayed
lotusland hostel

i stayed two nights in nanning, the town is very modern with no tourism. they are famous for their dog hot pot and think i found the street where many restaurants specialize in it.

i have been smelling the most disgusting smell coming from some street food stalls around china, i experienced it again down the busy pedestrianised street reserved for them. i don't know what it is but it smells like they are cooking human feces on the grill and as soon as my nostrils pick it up my lungs lock and are paralysed for 5 seconds until my feet cooperate and move myself away from the offending odour.

i have also failed in the true traveller food department, within the 36 hours that i was in nanning i managed to consume 2 mcdonalds and 1 pizza hut. i did enjoy it but feel hypocritical as i tutted when i saw a new mcdonalds being built by the river side in yangshuo. i will improve in Vietnam as i don't believe mcdonalds has a franchise there to tempt me to the darkside.

the hostel, lotusland hostel, is expensive but pure luxury.. i was in envy at the taps they use in the bathroom, if you ever visit the middle basins tap is what i will be ordering one day for my own home.. it flows like a waterfall. the shower heads were pretty smart too. the hostel was very clean and modern and i understand the price they ask. also the visa service is excellent, just hand your passport in with the money, there is no extra service charge, and the passport comes back with your visas ready without you trying to find the visa office, waiting in line, filling in forms and so on.. the bus to hanoi is direct and the station is just around the corner from the hostel, on the way i was late, again, so missed out on some delicious looking dumplings that you have to pass on the way there.
