I caught the 37,000 peso overnight bus from Santiago to Calama with tur bus.. I got the upstairs front seat but it wasnt great as if i wasnt sleeping then the front curtains were drawn to stop me from burning up in the sun.. no hot drinks or food was served, the cheapskates.. The calama to San pedro de atacama connection took an hour through great scenary to plonk me at this tiny little oasis town. I thought Calafate was sparse but this area beats that..

I'm staying at another bland HI hostel, the staff are cack.. If you plan on staying around here a far superior place is "Éden Ataxameña".. I got up around 7:30 to go for the free cup of tea and piece of bread that resembles and tastes like a large rich tea biscuit, they call breakfast, I ask a couple of backpackers how to get the brekkie.. 'ask the man' ..he said come back at 8:30.. He was an obnoxious looking Lazy fat guy. I came back when told and was told to sit down and wait.. 10minutes later I can see them pulling out a cup from a cupboard for me.. I'm left in the sun, a little hungry and admiring how white my legs have become after a month wrapped up from the minus degree temperatures of the south.

My first night in San pedro de ataxcama i signed up on the popular astronomy tour.. I loved every second off it and had definatly made up my mind to invest in a decent telescope when I settle.. I got to see other galaxies, double stars, Alpha Centura, coloured stars, Jupiter and it's moons upclose and whole lotta of other stuff I can't remember what they were, the guy and his wife running it really love their job and the enthuisaism shows.. The sky was amazingly clear, with the milkyway, planets and stars brighter than I have ever seen it before, we were lucky with havingno moon out and got to see spinning satelittes and shooting stars as a bonus too. I couldn't recomened it enough if you're in the area..

Today i spent 5 hrs on the Internet, Getting my pics onto a couple of DooVDes, a bit of Skype to keep the misses happy and fixing up my iPod with some RinseFM podcasts to get me through the 3 day 4x4 trek coming up.. for eats i've just walked into the Salon de tea along the main road of this place, pretty nice quiche and a whole heap of teas to choose from, I just downed a 'passion fruit, mango & orange' black tea..

My tour is booked, I went with the Turismo Colque agent, on the recomendation of mark the American in my dorm, it cost 50,000 pesos and all the adventures will be written up once I get to Uyuni in Bolivia.. and tomorow i´ll be renting a mountain bike to check out some local ruins which are not only special because they are the Timbuktu of the Atacama desert but because they are owned and run by the indeginous descendants without the gov. getting their greedy hands on them..
