The bus from haiti to santo domingo was ok, the seats were good, they provided a small meal and i managed to get some good pics of the lakes around the border and also a few hours sleep. They dominican customs got everyone off the bus to check their luggage the haitien got checked hard, i told them i was from england and i didn't even have to unclip a strap on my backpack. Terra bus drops you a little way out from el conde in the old colonial part which i wanted to get to.. the taxi drivers wanted 300 pesos to take me i managed to get down to 200 pesos, but i knew there would be some other way so i asked about the bus and saw a sign for centro ciuadad so i had my bearings..

i missed the bus but thought i could start walking until i get to a street name that i recognised. i waited at one bus stop to get me further into town, but the publico taxis were using some strange hand signals for the direction they were heading which reminded me of the port of spain taxis in trinidad.. also to add to my problem i was now a mute, everything in my mind was either in english or creole, i had forgotten every signal word of the spainish i'd learnt apart from 'donde'.. i decided against trying to do sign language to get directions to el conde and walked on.

after half an hour of walking i found the major road i was looking for and turned inwards to locate the next major road that would take me directly to my hotel. on my way there a taxi driver called out if i needed a taxi, on this rare occastion he had guessed right and as the souvineers from haiti were waying my pack down more than normal i decided to give up and take the offer. it was 20 pesos (about 40 pence) cheaper than the final offer of the taxi driver at the bus terminal but that didn't matter as i let the driver keep the change from the 200 pesos i'd gave him and i was feeling pretty shattered.

back in santo domingo, i planned on staying in my hotel, eat loads of junk food and watch cable tv for the 3 days i was there. I did venture out and took a load of photos of some of the many old sites that they have scattered over the city. The last in town and the day that i finished loading up my 1mg memory card with photos i decided to hit the local bar for some people watching. I had many beers and was ready to go to my room when i started chatting to these other travellers from spain, cuba and an eastern bloc country that i can't remember. Anyway they were a good laugh, so i drank some more with them.. they turned out to be gay and were conversing about how easy it was fopr one of them to chat up a guard across the road and so on..

After about an hour of hearing gay stories i felt the urged to chat to some good looking and loose women instead so changed seats. i was pretty drunk by now but the uglier fatter one must have pick pocketed me whilst i was standing talking to the fit one. at some point in the night they decided to leave quite quickly which suited me as i was way beyond functioning point and just about made it to bed. So in the morning when i was looking for my camera to tell me how late i'd woken up and probably overstayed the check out time i realised the devious demimondes had taken my camera or i lost it somewhere but that wouldn't be as good a story.

that morning i quickly hunted around a couple of pawn shops to see if my camera was there and a couple of camera shops but they were pretty crap and nothing i saw pleased me. so i'll probaly wait now until my stop over in miami before jamaica to buy a new and improved one. I managed to check out at 2.30pm and the hotel i was staying was great in not adding to my misery and charging me an extra days rent.
