you off round a rocky outcrop to the village of Labadie, i should've asked the driver how much it's gonna cost, as i asked Joseph a couple of times but carried on talking nonsense pretending to misunderstand me. I was stung for the ride for 10usd, that included Josephs half as well.. i later found out the going rate to charter these small boats round the corner is 100 Haitian gourdes which is about 3 us dollars, but you also have the choice, which i would have preferred, of getting on one which may have a short wait for it to fill up but will get you there for 10 gourdes, which is 30cents American.
. Joseph did walk me through the village a show me the way to Kay anol, which is creole for 'anol's house' I'd already researched on the Internet that it was 25usd, now Josephs got the guy to show me the room, spoke a little creole to him and now the room according to Joseph is 40usd a night, i knew the fat ***t was trying to totally fuck me over now so told him I'll leave it and try the other hotel in town called norms place.. Joseph tried to discourage me by saying that it's 60-70us dollars a night over there so should stay at kayanol.. Anyway i tried to politely lose him as i didn't want to create an enemy in this small town but he followed me to norms where i was told that they were full up, 'bollox I'm gonna have to go back to the only other hotel now'
Luckily i found a guy on the premises called Jimmy, who confirmed the price was only 25usd in front of Joseph.. I left to go back to the other hotel and finally got rid of the hustler Joseph when he started to try and rent out his spare bedroom to me for money as he was opening his door i said 'see yah' and walked off. back at kayanol in my Limited french i managed to understand the room is in fact 25 US dollars so dropped my bag happy I'd found a room and got rid of the con artist Joseph.
That evening i hooked up with Jimmy from norms place along with Eddie and was shown round the projects that their NGO had done to the village, first was the flag pole that they erected to let everyone know that we are in Haiti and not Hispaniola that some cruise shippers are told, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line apparently keeps its lips shut that they are in fact docking in Haiti as they think it may scare away customers.
. the passengers don't in fact touch real Haiti, there private beach is out of site from the the village of labadie, they are entertained all day with American diners, jet skis and inflatables.. i see a few interested ones come close to the village on a kayak tour but don't come ashore and interact with the locals, which in my opinion is a loss but for they aren't here for cultural interaction anyway.. so back to Vwa Ayiti, which is jimmy and Eddies charitable organisation that built the flag pole, which interestingly got pulled down by a local guy called Willy, that when i met was very upset with Royal Caribbean Cruise lines for something, Vwa Ayiti (voice of Haiti) also painted a mural of the history of Haiti, i love murals and was very impressed with this one, check the pics when they are uploaded.. recently after getting some direction from another ngo from Milot Jimmy's' crew have turned to building toilets for the locals to use instead of peeing in the river and crapping on the hill.. it's such good necessary work because you have people pissing in the water upstream whilst kids are playing and women are washing clothes and themselves downstream, by the time the river gets to the ocean it's very stinky and polluted.
That evening i met the local people involved in the organisation of Vwa Ayiti and was immediately accepted in the fold, i had a great diner with them and was treated to some beautiful singing from an old lady that I've forgot the name off.. I asked jimmy if there was some way i can get my hands dirty and help and he said sure, showed me to Kino, the project manager and was told to turn up tomorrow morning.
My tap-tap to Labadie was great fun, 30 minutes of pot holed roads, riding in the back of an over loaded pick up truck full of women making (harmless) jokes out of the white boy in the corner.. the fun ended when we arrived at the routes ends, i ended up having some idiot fat hustler called Joseph attached to me, he showed me round the fenced off royal Caribbean private beach enclosure to the small wooden 8horse powered boats that
