The ferry over to martinique came in late to St. lucia, it also left a little late as when we were about to depart a fight broke out on board and the ports security and police was called on board which ment lower the walkway back on the side and seeing the guy get escorted of yelling stuff i loved to have understood in french, so i get to fort-de-france well after dark and haven't a clue were the hotel i was booked into was, they was no tourist information at the port either so had to jump into a taxi to help me out, it cost 20 euros to go to the other side of downtown, i'm sure i was knocked as the driver pressed the button on the meter to display a 'd' which probably means double or something. My hotel was costing 95euros a night which is a total budget killer, the cheaper guesthouses i'd emailed previously had no vancancies because of the carnival so got tucked up there aswell. The carnaval was a good fun, i done a lot of drinking in the heat and by this morning after the last night was feeling pretty crap. which is probably good for updating my blog as i've been inside this air-conditioned internet cafe most of the day.

i'm getting by on french pretty well, i'm having a problem with numbers so even though i know how to ask "how much" it's useless unless they reply in english, which most do even though i was told before i came here that no-one spêaks english. i think they take pity on me and see that i'm trying my best at speaking their language so switch over to help me out.

I'm now in a cheaper hotel and have got the volcano planned along with some beach time down on the southern tourist beaches which as being on a french beach means alot of topless women to pass time watching

Martinique Taxi
At night the taxis in Martinique charge, as best I remember, a 50% surcharge. This is probably why he hit 'd' on the meter and charged so much.

It was best for you to take a taxi as downtown where the ferry came in is not a place to hang out after dark. I love the island but downtown is the sleaziest place.

What we really need is someone with a regular house or appartment who can provide a room for a reasonable price, since even off season, nothing is really cheap.

Re: Martinique Taxi
hi there sf.. you know i was feeling bad about what i wrote about the taxi driver a day before i read your comment, i found out as you say they have a surcharge at night, also i arrived on a sunday during carnival.. plus after going around the town a few times afterwards realised he didn't take me on a merry-go-round around the town to raise the fare and to top it off he did let me off 2.40euros of the meter price at the end of it.. so sorry to bagging the driver and thanks for pointing it out sferg.
