The first morning i get up and try to get my bearings of the town hilsbrough.. The main street is about 200metres long, all the buildings look old, faded and in need of a bit of tlc.. i try the tourist office for a map of carriacou as my LP doesn't have one but it's a saturday and office is closed, by mid afternoon the whole town pretty much closes til monday morning. At the far end i'm called over by a cute girl of about 12, she asks me where i'm from, I tell her London... and her reply was.. 'oh, do you know Margret?' .. i'm like, "sorry who?" then i'm told it's her auntie who works in the hospital there.. i tell her we have many hospitals in London.. As i walk on i'm thinking that because Carriacou has just the one hospital, she must had thought London was the same in size and that everyone knows each other.. She couldn't have been more wrong, Carriacou life is slow and very friendly.. as i've been walking around the island.. everyone wants to wave at me and say hello.. if i don't say hello then it would seem rude.. where as London, everything is fast, no-one knows anyone and more over on the street walking along no-one really wants to know anyone..

I've been having problems with my mobile phone.. since i left Trinidad i haven't been able to top up my now run down credit in Grenada.. even though when i was buying it i was told i could top up all over the caribbean, in St. George the girl receptionist said it wasn't recognizing my number.. i tried again in carriacou with the same problem. when i get to Union island on Thursday i'm gonna buy a new sim card to get round it.. plus that will eliminate the higher roaming charges atleast until i get to St. Lucia. Another funny thing with these phones over here it seems that i can't txt message rival firm phones, such as Digicel.. i not sure if it's because they are incompatible or just because they are 2 competing firms that don't want to do favours for each other..

Tommorow i've got to find out about the postal boat that travels between to my next island in the grenadines, it's ment to be real cheap like 20ec, which considering it cost 60ec to get the short distance over to sandy island is quite a bargain.. i'm gonna try and get a month visa this time so that i don't feel so rushed and i also need to get some more sea sickness tablets for the trip over. What's good about the next few islands are that the currency of Eastern Caribbean dollars is staying the same for a while... well apart from the more expensive islands of Martinique and guadeloupe which use the euro. What i've noticed when talking to people about my backpacking adventure starting in the caribbean is the main worry that it's gonna cost too much, but i'd say that when compared to traveling round europe the budget is quite the same and still way cheaper than London.. the Caribbean is sunnier, has more beaches and more independently planned than a tour or rail pass around Europe. It still has it's fair share of history and culture.. and plus living right next door to Europe for 25 years i've felt lathargic to go and make the most of it, prefering to venture further a field..

and finally, Yesterday i got hustled bad, when walking over to the far end of the island up and down a massive hill which on top has the hospital with commanding views, i was stopped by two girls of 7 and 8.. they were quite intelligent and could hold a conversation whilst we were walking along this track.. then they came out with that they were really after a dollar each because they were raffling a clock at school, i had some spare changed so bought a worthless ticket of each of them, i don't need a clock and i won't be here for the draw anyway, when i got into the main town of Windward.. the road had quite a few pockets of children, holding a small bags of coins and raffle tickets in their hands, luckily none of these next ones had the hustler instinct in them and i made my way safely through with the small amount of beer money i had brought out with me that day.
