Today we woke up early and packed to leave Santa Fe. We drove past Chaco Canyon to Aztec National Monument, which lies north of the Canyon and was a major center after Chaco's prominence. There we walked through a Chaco style Great House with many kivas, and a unique great kiva (it had a series of small rooms ringing it that looked into the kiva space proper) which has been rebuilt. The masonry was exquisite and of several different varieties, including banded. The doors were a bit low.
After our visit, we drove to Chaco Canyon. It was incredible to drive into the canyon and see Fajada Butte rising out of the snow-dusted landscape. We took the driving tour of the canyon, and I enjoyed seeing a variety of Great Houses as well as a staircase and the stunning natural scenery. We settled into our housing and had a good dinner and rounded off the evening by playing Cranium. Overall an amazing day.
