Returning from Uganda's sunny and summery temps was difficult -- February in Istanbul is never pretty. Though, to be fair, it was definitely a relatively mild month: there were some very cold days, but we also had sunny and warm days tossed in there that were nice enough to take our kids into the garden during playtime.

Konrad and I tend to go into hibernation mode in the winter. It's not that we never go out, but we have been known to stay in for an entire day and night at the weekend in such weather. That said, we did get out of the house a fair share over the two months we were in town between school holidays.
Lenore, a friend we had met while doing our teacher training course in Bangkok in 2005, came to visit in February. In fact, she arrived the day after we got back from Uganda, so right after our return, we were exploring the chillier climes of Istanbul with her and trying to show her a few nooks and crannies not in the guidebooks. That same week, we bid a sad and sudden farewell to our bud Maggie, an Istanbul fixture without whom the city is "dimmer" -- fingers crossed she'll be back for a visit soon!

Fortunately, there were a number of other events, like birthdays and expat productions, to tide us over and occupy our itchy feet until our mid-semester break in early April. There was, of course, lots going on at school on top of the social side of life in Istanbul during February and March too -- including a decision to be made about whether or not we were interested in staying in our current jobs come the next academic year. By the time our school holiday rolled around, we'd both made the decision to commit for another year and were off to Jordan feeling calm and settled as a result.
