Place a l'accueil polonais....

-------------------------------

After a quick ride on the suburban train, I get down at Diemen station to climb up the motorway. Holding and displaying my 'Berlin' board, I feel most confident!

Half an hour later, a van stops over 9yeah, my first lift had to be a van, don't ask why!!) and leads me to a patrol station next to where the guy gets out of the motorway to his home.

One hour and a half spent at his patrol station is not the best moment of the day. Almost bullied off by the cops, discouraged over by a Polish truck driver who's not driving back there yet.

I'm finnally taken by a 50's year old woman who's going to visit her disabled twin sister who had a car crash a few months ago. She has such a positve smile and nice spirit that I see nothing of these 40 min spent together till she drives round about Amersfoort and drops me at another patrol station.

I ask a few Lithuania, Polish and Latvian truck drivers. True excuses or not leads to no success. I even quest two polish drivers who are refulling their LPG tank. But between the wrecked alternator belt of the first and the bad mood of the other, there is not much place.

I carry on being positive! The previous woman lifted my mood which was still high anyway! ;-)

And then appears the reward! A Polish trucks stops over. He explains me in Polish than that's not the most convenient for me as he's making a stop over somewhere to load and that he won't be today in Berlin! Hey mate, I don't give a damn. I jump in right away! 'Bitte' is his reply.

Here a dream is becoming true: to be taken by a truck all the way to Poland!! On my very first day of HHing!!

Adrian is very nice, welcoming and funny! As we communicate in Polish and English, we don't have great and deep conversations but sure enough to have good time! As he offers me the transport mean, the food and the shelter, I feel freer than ever and think about how good this trip is starting!!!

We drive down southwards from Kassel where he has to take a load from a drug fabric. Unfortunately, as a paper is missing, we'll have to wait for it till tomorrow morning.

Pasta, tea and bed.

Alarm clock a 7am but we can only leave at 10:30 when the fax had been sent through.

Meanwhile, Gosia, my friend from Poznan I had given the lift to Barcelona 2 years ago, texts me she won't be in Poznan till Sunday but I can stay in her former flatmate's place, Agata. Wicked!! :-)

But today is bank holiday in Poland (Constitution day) so trucks are not allowed to drive in the country. Nevermind!

I part with Adrian and warmly thank him for the greatest ride I could hope for!

I stick my thumb out and wait to be taken to Poznan which is only 160km away, on the way to Warsaw.

The setting sun is shining directly on my forehead which is getting a bit sore. I wonder what I'm gonna do when it desappears behind the trees of the no-man's-land.

I don't have to worry too much as I wait less than an hour (which I reckon was long, believing in the Polish's reputation and culture of HHing)

Slawek is a nice guy who's occupation is to fetch VW Bugs to Germany, drive them back to a friend in Warsaw. His friend refurbishes and sells them. He assures me the Bug is getting fashionable in Poland, as people have more and more money. Well, with 4 trips a month, each of them worthing 400EUR, that's sort of a good Polish monthly income!

He meets up with his brother in Poznan and carries on to Warsaw. His brother gives the last ride to Agata's street.

I'm supposed to wait till 9pm when she's supposed to get back home. I go and grab some beers and an apple. Actually, she's already here so that makes it even easier.
