Where I stayed
Top 10 at Papamoa Beach
What a gorgeous drive, most of it was right on the black sand shore line and we saw the most gorgeous sunset over Kirita Bay. We arrived quite late to Coromandel and drove through loads of colonial style buildings. We found the Top 10 was pretty good and we pitched the tent and went back into town for a couple of drinks. There was a nice looking bar that was a bit quite and a huge sports bar/hotel that had music videos playing. We tried both but ended up in the sports bar. It was good fun and the locals were friendly. The clincher was that the booze was the cheapest we've come across, anywhere, so far. A pint of larger and a double gin & tonic for $10.50, bargain !
The following morning we continued on SH 25 East. On the way we stopped at a lovely bay, Whangapoua Harbour, where folk were launching small boats at Quarry Point. It was quite amusing to watch as the ramp was tiny and surrounded by rocks so folk had to be patient and take turns. We got chatting to a chap who was also sat watching the antics.
We continued travelling down he East coast to Whitianga. This is a really nice town, we parked up and had a walk around. Robert needed new Merrels as he's ruined his original pair (he does ware them every day) and we got them here then to celebrate we found..... And Irish bar!
Further down the coast we stopped at Tairua . We were just going to drive straight through but saw some guys using a snowboard being towed by a jet-ski over ramps and jumps. So we stopped and had lunch on the water front and watched them. It was lovely , sat in the sun with a gentle breeze coming off the water. It was a really hot day!
We then drove straight on to Tauranga. We stayed at the Top 10 at Papamoa Beach. It's the most expensive & biggest Top 10 we've stayed at so far. We had a drive to Omanu and had a bite to eat then went to the cinema.
