Entry 74 of 91 | show all | print this entry

The time in the run up to Christmas was busy. We had to get the work finished at the holiday cottage as a couple were coming on the 21st and the evenings were spent up at the house with Meryl, Wayne, Tony. Jane and Stephen (Tony's sister and her hubby), Meryl's mother (Barney) and Larni (Tony's girlfriend) were also up for the holidays. We got on well with them all and the evenings were very enjoyable in their company. Jane and Stephen are expecting their first child in March and she looks really well.

When we'd done on the cottage we moved (under protest J ) to the sheep-shearers quarters. This was nearer to the main house and we chose a room nearest to the kitchen area. There was a shower room a few rooms down from us, but the water was cold so we used the bathroom in the building across from us. Actually the shearers room wasn't bad. The bed was comfy (once we'd propped up the broken leg) and we gave the room a good clean out (they'd not been used for a while). Considering we had use of the kitchen area and spent most of our time up at the main house, it provided everything we needed.

The couple days immediately before Christmas I started on cleaning the main house. I think I was a bit too thorough as Meryl commented on how long I was taking, but she was okay about it, I think she realised that I was doing a spring-clean and not just messing about. I hope so, because I was knackered every day. Robert helped Wayne build a retaining wall up at the station.

On the Friday night before Christmas they had a Christmas do for the staff and their families. They spit-roasted a whole hogget (1 year old lamb). It was good, they did a lolly scramble, which is where they throw lots a wrapped sweets in the air and all the kids (and some big kids) scramble around to collect as many as possible. They gave all the staff their Christmas gifts. It didn't go on too late but it was nice for us to meet everyone.

We had been very kindly invited to spend Christmas Day with the family, which would have been lovely. However, Sarah and Alan had also invited us for Christmas and Boxing Day, and we really wanted to see them, so on Christmas eve we set off to their house.

Sarah's mum was over from the UK and her Sister and her hubby were over from Oz and it was really nice of them to welcome us as they did. It was kinda strange to be going back to their house as it had become so familiar to us it was kind of like going home and made me rather emotional.
