San Jose, Costa Rica. 08/10 to 10/10 2007

We arrived in San Jose about 12, the group went to lunch together, except for Ammie (who was going to meet her friend Adam) Paula & Andrew (who were flying home that afternoon :-( ) and us. We needed to get to a DHL office and get our insurance documents in the post. The owner (Orietta) of the hostel (a HI one as it turned out) called Green House, was so lovely she drove us all the way to the DHL (it was miles away!) and Kevin came with to translate. As it happened the guy in DHL spoke fab English.
Orietta took us a restaurant that served traditional old Costa Rican meals so we treated her & Kevin to say thankyou. She was great, we drank several glasses of wine, tasted each others food and then had a traditional old desert which was like a flaky pastry circle that was deep fried and covered with a secret recipe sweet sauce. mmmmmmmm.
After, back at the Hostel, we had a kip (afternoon drinking you know!!) then met the group for our farewell dinner. We had a collection for Kevin and I was volunteered to say a few words on behalf of the group. Short & sweet. Then back to bed! Robert has started with man-flu!! oh no!
The following morning we awoke and it was raining (it rained ALL day!) Robert was still ill so I got him breakfast in bed (this place includes in the price coffee, toast, orange juice). Then Sophie & I braved the rain and went to the local supermarket and I bought Roberts favourite, maccaroni cheese, and some other basics for lunch.
We did some internet stuff, and was gutted to discover that the GAP tour we wanted to do through South America was now full! we checked some other tour operators that very similar tours, but they too were all full! Shite! We tried to find some smaller tours that we could link together but it was silly. I'm not in a position / place where I have the luxury of trawling through tons of tours trying to check avaiablity and dates! AArrgg! I've e-mailed Toucan Tours and Intrepid Tours to see if they can help (I guess I'll have to wait and see) If we don't do a tour, not sure what we'll do as Robert and I have agreed that we arn't comfortable with doing it independently. Some of it is laziness and having to work out where to go, where to stay, how to get there and what to do when we get there. A lot of it is confidence and feeling safe. The theft really shook how we feel about travelling through a country in which we don't know the local language. I have been trying to learn Spanish, but it's no where near strong enough for us to feel confident enough to travel alone on it. I guess we might just go straight to New Zealand and come back to S America another time (after I've learnt more Spanish as I will keep on learing it now I've started).
Anyway... We made a lovely dinner in the hostel of chicken noodles and hot-dog sausages, then watched a couple of movies in the TV room with Ammie, Adam, Graham and the new member of our tour group from tommorrow, Melissa. White Noise and Gothica. Then bed.
