Following our tour of the Stasi Museum, we were given a walking tour of some of the places in Leipzig that were played a part in the Peaceful Revolution. The director of the museum was was an eye-witness and participant in the Peaceful Revolution.

I hope one of my travel companions will provide me with the name of our tour guide. I didn't get it written down. She told us about the way citizens began gathering at St. Nicholas Church every Monday evening. They knew that there were Stasi among the crowd. Each week the crowds would get bigger and bigger. They filled the square outside the church. The picture below shows the lighted stepping stones that commemorate the growing crowds that propelled the revolution. At night they light up in a random fashion, much like the way the crowds grew.

She talked about how it felt to live in GDR. She talked about looking up at the dreary sky and thinking that somewhere there must be sunshine, but that she would never have the opportunity to go there. She said that whenever they received a package or letter from the West, she thought she could smell freedom as it was opened.
