Snakker du norsk? Do you speak Norwegian?
I started taking Norwegian lessons in the middle of October. At first it was fun; I enjoyed learning the language and I was keen on taking lessons. It started with pronouncing letters and learning numbers and before too long I was really good at hearing the time in the morning on the radio or the total of my groceries at the store.
I continued to go to lessons two times a week for two hours each and learned more and more words each lesson. However it took a long time before I could pick out more than just the numbers when people were speaking!
After four months of lessons, I can have basic conversations with colleagues and I can understand enough written Norwegian to get by. In fact, I was able to understand about 90% of what school age said they had planned for their winter vacations in the weekend newspaper.
Lately I am avoiding doing my homework and dreading going to the lessons. I keep thinking I will go for one more week of classes and then reassess. Since I will only be here for a year, how much Norwegian do I really need to know when almost everyone speaks English?
I guess I will keep going to class for another week...
