One of the most difficult things we have encountered is shopping for groceries. All of the packaged food information is in Norwegian, so it makes shopping a bit of a guessing game! Some things easily translate...baking powder = bak pulvert and some things don't...baking soda = natron!

We have a grocery store that is about a three minute walk from our flat. This store is where we have been buying most of our daily groceries (milk, meat, bread). On Friday we went out to the suburb of Tasta to a larger supermarket and purchased some of the kitchen staples that we needed.

The meat in Norway is very expensive and the selection is very different from home. There is lots of lamb, pork, and some chicken. The most common form of beef is ground beef and there are about five different varieties. Last week when we wanted to purchase ground beef we couldn't tell the difference between the packages, so we just went with the mid-priced option.

On Saturday night we had lamb for dinner. The lamb is really cheap so we bought a package of miscellaneous lamb parts. I wasn't sure exactly what it was, so it made it difficult to find a recipe. I ended up deciding that they were lamb shanks and made a lamb osso bucco that turned out to be amazing!

Tonight we had "hamburgerstek", which translates into ham! By looking at the package in the store, we thought it was ham but we weren't sure if it was cooked or not and given the name we were second guessing ourselves. I cooked the "hamburgerstek" in the oven as if it was an uncooked ham and when it was finished it did turn out to be ham.

Later in the week we are going to visit the butcher shop. The quality and selection of meat is supposed to be much better than the grocery store. The only difficulty will be communicating what we want!

We are also planning to check out the fresh fish market to see what is available there.
