Our first stop after leaving Cabo San Lucas was Ensenada De Los Muertos. We tried to hit up Los Frailes, a small bay about 40 miles north of Cabo in the Sea of Cortez, but by the time we reached Los Frailes it was dark and we decided we didn’t want to try to find a place to anchor in the dark so we continued on. Muertos is about 40 miles north of Frailes and after sailing overnight, finally dropped anchor about 10 in the morning. When we got there there was already about 6 other boats anchored out, but still plenty of room for us to find a quiet spot away from the other boats and drop anchor. This anchorage was our favorite one so far. The water was crystal clear, we dropped anchor in about 17 feet of water and we could see the anchor and chain on the bottom no problem. Not only was the water a beautiful blue green and crystal clear it was so warm! We did a little swimming and snorkeling right off the boat! Another thing we loved about this anchorage is that it was quiet. Although there were 6 other boats there, which was really only because the Baja Ha Ha was in town, there wasn’t much there. There was a fleet of fishing skiffs that apparently were charter boats and there was a little quiet resort like community that housed a golf course and that’s about it. On the upside there was a little beach side bar there that had good drinks and delicious food! It was a perfect set up, we would spend the day exploring, swimming or working on the boat in the 80-degree heat and then in the afternoon head to the bar to get an ice-cold beer or daiquiri! Since we don’t have refrigeration and ran out of booze before we ever made it to Ensenada this worked out perfect!
We really mostly just enjoyed the quietness and the peace that this anchorage provided. We did think it was funny though that during the day there would be on average 6 boats or less that were anchored there, but during the evening there would be an influx of 14 or 15 boats, usually from the HA HA that would come up from Frailes. So each night the bay would be packed full of boats anchored out, but each morning the whole big group would pull out and leave the anchorage nice and quite again.
