Where I stayed

Flag of Mauritania  ,

Mauritania is currently suffering from an image crisis, arguably deserved due to the abdujction of a number of tourists over the past few years.  The country is noticeably nervous for foreigners safety during their stay, with an overly exaggerated number of security checks throughout all journeys and hotel guides willingly walking you down the street for free as it is 'not safe for you'.

Having said that the people were nothing but hospitable toward us wherever we went and we were once again taken in like lost urchins to the house of a stranger for the night.  Ibrahim, the son of the ex minister for tourism for Mauritania, kindly took us to his humungous house and feed us huge amounts of food.  The house had all of four sitting rooms big enough for 18 - 20 people to sit on sofas in each and about 10 bedrooms.  However when it came to bedtime Spud was shown to his personal double master bedroom and I was ushered toward the girls bedroom where all the 8 girls of the house sleep together on mattresses on the floor.  Brilliant.  The men can sleep in the same rooms if they want or they can have their own room.  But the girls all sleep together.  We decided that we would tell everyone we were married after that.

We continued on our journey to Senegal soon after that experiencing our first border 'tax' from a very unofficial not government worker who pretty much stands in your way shouting at you and grabbing your bag until you give him some money.  Its a pretty good earner really as during our 4 hour wait for the border officials to stop having lunch we observed him squatting down to count his brick thick stash of cash.
