on Saturday our (expensive) week languishing in the air conditioning of the resort was over and we had to head back to basics. we've decided to go with Brandon and Larry (father and son who were at Costa Maya as well) over to Caye Caulker for a few days. but first, book hunting and ice cream in san Pedro. the night before, Shane had finished reading angels and demons by Dan brown - so we went looking for the Da Vinci Code, we picked up that and deception point - then went to find the ice cream shop. after ice cream back to the Caye caulker water taxi - who proceeded to rip us off - we paid for 2 round trip tickets from Belize city to san Pedro - but the boat isn't direct, it stops in Caye Caulker - so we wanted to use our tickets to stop in Caye Caulker for a few days then continue on to Belize City. that was a 'no-go' company policy evidently. needless to say we used our ticket to get to Caye caulker and used a different (better) company called Triple J to go back to Belize City.
Our arrival in Caye Caulker...
We shopped around for a bit for ridiculously affordable accommodations ($25 Belize Dollars) per night, assisted by a local shop owner who told us about a few cheap places to stay. so we walked around on the streets of sand that crisscross Caye caulker to our hotel "The Happy Lobster". After acquiring our room key we walked around and found Brenden and Larry drinking 2 for 1 happy hour drinks and of course we joined them immediately.
We spent the next 3 days doing as little as possible in the stifling heat. the mornings and evenings were used to walk around, eat, drink and be merry. due to it being slow season, many businesses had closed up shop for 2 months. but we had a good time anyways. there were a few great bars on the island. at the north end (called the split) was the Lazy Lizard bar, complete with picnic tables in the ocean and a diving board to hop in and cool down.
the bamboo grill had fantastic food, sand floors and swings to sit on at the bar and half the tables. the other great bar was the I & I Reggae Bar, at the south end of town. the bar occupied the top 2 floors of a 3 story building. the main floor had the bar, dance floor and of course swings at the bar.
the 3 days hanging out on a backpackers island was a nice change from the 'upclass' feeling of san Pedro....

happy lobster restaurant and hostel
the top floor was open air with a roof, many swings and a few hammocks and a great loft mattress - i guess in case you drank too much. and of course reggae music and requisite rasta men smoking weed.the 3 days hanging out on a backpackers island was a nice change from the 'upclass' feeling of san Pedro....

Thanks for sending the blog! Sounds like you're having fun. Too bad about the bout ride, but what's an adventure without some minor mishaps? We have already talked to Larry and it sounds like he had a good time. Helene's been trying to find the best price on the Nintendo DS. She may snag one from one of her friend's kids. Keep us in the loop and be safe!
