Since our last posting....we rented a car in Iowa and drove back to Chicago for a couple more days of pampering before heading off to the wild unknown of 3rd world Central America. There is much that is different about Honduras from the States, ie. banks being guarded by machine gun wielding macho men, small cars with large loads of people and random shit, lots of garbage and stray dogs.
We flew into San Pedro Sula, Honduras and took a bus to La Ceiba. We stayed in a hotel in La Ceiba (see pics from the veranda). We got up early the next day to go to the ferry - leaving the hotel at 8am. when we arrived at the ferry dock, we were informed that the ferry was not leaving that day until 4pm. so we spent our day reading dive books and talking to random people that were waiting as well. 4pm rolled around - and surprise surprise - no ferry. we were notified through the grapevine (read- one of Kirstin's friends utila) that the ferry was dry docked and it would be another 1.5 hours. At 6pm the ferry finally left the dock. It was an extremely exciting ride over ocean swells 10 feet - at least 3 people were puking and everything outside was soaked- including Shane and Kirstin.
Upon our arrival, some of Kirstin's friends were nice enough to bring us to the dive shop to pick up our room key and next stop - the bar (Skid Row), where we proceeded to get into the island mindset over $1 strong rum and cokes.
The fan in our room at the base of the bed threatens to chop our toes to little bits, due to the lack of safety casing.
Our commute from our room to the dive shop is less then 50 yards
After a day of reading in a hammock on the deck at the dive shop, our dive instructor threw Shane in the water to see if he could float, and then proceed to teach him how to dive - going through the many exercises he hopes he will never have to use (emergency techniques).
Tomorrow Shane will be doing his Open Water dives 1 & 2 toward his certification.
Two nights ago, Shane was awoken to lightening and thunder, repeat until exhaustion, Kirstin just rolled over and said nice storm. Sudden and brief rain have been the norm since our arrival.
Our plans may get slightly changed due to interesting stories we are hearing from Guatemala - we will keep you posted.
More soon as our adventures continue.
