As a young girl she rode the train to Chicago, alone, to spend the summer in Chicago at the big brown stone house built by her great grandfather for his daughter and husband (her grandparents).
On both sides, her great grandparents immigrated from Germany.
FACT - google "Cardiff Giant" and learn about what maybe the greatest scientific hoax ever. And guess what, my mother's great grandfather, shown here with his wife, carved the gypsum man that was buried and then dug up and put on display as the "missing link" in the evolution of human kind. Edward Burkhardt was his name and he did not know how his carving was to be used nor was he paid much. And we don't know how much English he spoke. But he was an accomplished stone cutter and created many statues for the Chicago Memorial Cemetery.
Stories have been passed down to every generation in my family. One story is that my grandfather before marrying my grandmother and upon being introduced to his future father-in-law (Burkhardt) said something like "Oh it is so good to meet the son of the great hoaxer" !
Apparently this family legacy was a great embarrassment to my great grandfather, called "Dada Paps" and youngest child of the Burkhardts, (who i remember and have film footage of). Despite my grandfather's remark, he still made it into the family. And he had 5 daughters of whom my mother was the oldest.
