Im taking on four subject here at UT, so a standard full time load. These subjects are:
Fundamentals of Coaching
The Management of Physical Activities and Sport programs
The Modern Olympic Movement - World Affairs - This subject is pretty cool for a couple of reasons; our professor Dr Hunt is the author of the book 'Drug Games' , There is also two Longhorn football players in the class, one of which competed in the 2012 London games; Maquise Goodwin.
The Psychology of Advertising
Classes are set up pretty simlar to Australia in that each subject requires 3 contacts hours a week and include tutorials and lectures. The only major difference is the frequency of assesments. there is usually an assignment/exam/presentation every 2/3 weeks with each assesment being only a small portion of your overall mark.
The Fun stuff! The Texas Longhorns!
College football (Seperate to the NFL) is massive here in the States and this follows true for Texas. The team here in Austin is The "Texas Longhorns". and last year the football team made a net profit of $71 million dollars, this compares to the top rugby league teams earning $2 milion a year. College footballers cannot be paid for playing and all profits earned are reinvested into the College or the team. This would explain the size and quality of UT.
I've been to 2 games so far and both games are the equivilent to an NRL grand final with both games having crowds of 101,000 .
Now before the start of every home game it is a must to "Tailgate". Tailgating involves the shutting down of many streets within around 5 blocks of the stadium for people to set up camp, anywhere from 7 hours before kick off, to drink, eat and party. It is custom for girls to wear white or burnt orange dresses with cowgirl boots and for guys to wear their cowboys boots and a collared shrts with white/beige trousers.
After hours of drinking its off to the game. The street a flooded with people and only one colour can be seen....Burnt orange. of the 101,000 that get to that game 100,000 of them are Longhorns fans and are wearing burnt orange. Before the game starts there are a few traditions:
- The college band performs
- The display of the largest Texas flag in the world
- The national Anthem
- The song "the Eyes of Texas" plays (video below)
So far the Longhorns are 2 - 0 beating Wyoming 37-17 and New Mexico 45 - 0.
