We took the scenic route to Clearlake Oaks through some more winding roads with forestry each side. Arriving in Clearlake Oaks we decided the place was too small to stay, so headed back to Clearlake, a larger nearby town, to check it out. We arrived at the lakefront in town and made an immediate decision to reconsider our accommodation for the night. The water stunk. There was obviously no movement so the water smelled of rotting weed and had lage chunks of river weed or algae at the top. We continued along the lakefront for a whole figuring we should stop somewhere for a bit just to make sure we weren't making too hasty a decision. The buildings, including motels, all looked very rundown and poorly maintained. We found a park to stop at and pulled up in the shade under a tree then sat on the grass to decide what to do. It didn't take long to confirm our original decision as an argument broke out between two women further down the park. Apparently the woman who was a drunk had done something to the woman who was always high the Saturday night just gone and one of them had just got out of jail. A punch up followed and we decided we had unintentionally stopped at a junkie park and witnessed a junkie scrap, so we high-tailed it out of there as the women moved in our direction...
With any stops at Clearlake now off our agenda we rode on to Fort Bragg, back on the coast. Out ride took us around a large chunk of the lake, which stopped smelling a fair way further round, and actually became quite scenic. Soon after the lake we turned off westward and started heading through redwood forests. The trees stretched as far as the eye could see and formed almost tunnel like situations over the road at times. It was all very lovely until we started coming down the other side of the hills we had been climbing and the temperature dropped significantly.
Reaching Fort Bragg around 4:30 we checked into our motel and went for a walk to see what the town had to offer. The downtown area wasn't large and it wasn't long til we had completed our loop.
Following a dinner at the onsite restaurant we went back to our room and did a bit of planning for the next couple of days.
