We got away around 11am. The marine layer was hanging around again, and really bringing the temperature of the town down. The ride started with fantastic coastal scenery. As we drove out of town it became clear where the beach access was. I'm not sure why there wasnt clear access all along the coast though. There seemed to be a lot of land that wasn't clearly used for anything, but maybe it was part on State Park land...
After a while on the coast the road turned inland, and immediately the Redwood trees started appearing on each side of the road. The road also started climbing and the temperature began to increase as well. There were a heap of hairpin bends going both up and down the road and as per usual, it was all very scenic.
Just before we got back on the 101 we came across Leggett, which was advertising the world famous "drive-thru tree". We had to make the short detour to check this out. It was worth it, and obviously there were plenty of others who thought the same. We were fortunate to drive through without a queue in front of us, but while we stopped in the car park to take some photos I noticed that there were several cars waiting to drive through the tree. It was quite impressive to watch the SUVs come through the tree gap, as it really didn't look that big.
Leaving Leggett Wayne commented that we were looking low on fuel, again. It appeared that a town was coming up, but as we got closer there was a "No Services" sign. Oh dear, what to do? Luckily we were saved by a petrol station... Hopefully this wasn't going to be a regular occurrence over our holiday...
The road brought us back to the coast and a very noticeable temperature drop. However we were far from Eureka now. We reached the town and found our motel. We checked in and found our room hadn't been made up yet. Fortunately we planned to head out so the cleaners sorted it one while we were gone. Had a look around the historic town and down town areas. Some very cool old houses and a nice boardwalk.
Our evening activity was sorting out some stuff at Walmart. This took quite a while, but once everything was sorted we came back to the motel. Wayne cleaned the bike and I mucked around in the room.
