Boat cruise in the Aegean Sea

Flag of Turkey  , Antalya,
Sunday, June 12, 2011

Today our group has hired a private boat and we are going to spend the day cruising around the islands of Turkey. Most of the islands in the Aegean Sea are owned by Greece, even the ones only a few miles away from the mainland and this has caused many problems between the Greeks and the Turks over the years. We have plenty of opportunities to swim in the sea, lie in the sun, sleep and generally relax (it has been really busy time) and we make the most of it. We see an ancient submerged city that sunk after an earthquake, the water is so clear that you can see the walls of buildings and boundaries on what used to be land.
Ice creams are delivered by speed boats throughout the day and a delicious lunch is provided by the boat owner and his wife, some of the best food we have had and all cooked in a small cabin and while looking after her infant.
More swimming follows lunch, then a nice cold beer in the sun as we pass the castle and old town on the hills above us. It seemed like we were a long way from the mainland but took only a few minutes to get back to Kekova where we return to Kas for the evening.
On the way Memis told us about some of the driving laws here in Turkey….  all buses carry a box, I suppose similar to a black box found on planes and it records the speed the bus has travelled and records breaks for the driver as they must have a sufficient break every 1and a half to 2 hours. This box keeps a record of all this information for the past three days so when stopped and the information checked the driver can be fined for any infringements during that time.A first speeding offense results in a fine, the second time drivers lose their license for a period of time and if a third offense occurs drivers have to go for a physiological assessment (obviously only people with an unhealthy state of mind would speed) and they only get their license back if they pass this test. Maybe we should do something similar in NZ?
