We left Ometepe Island on the first ferry heading back to San Jorge where we connected with a chicken bus to Managua and finally a small van to Leon. The van ride was hell as we had to sit with out backpack on our lap and it took 1:45. My pack may only weight 14kgs but that is a lot when balanced on my knees.
We had arranged accommodation at the Lazybones backpacker where Karen had stayed before. It is a nice backpackers with a great plunge pool. We originally had a triple room upstairs and had to go down through the common area to get to the bathroom and unfortunately they couldn't give us a room with a bathroom so we moved to the San Juan Hotel. The San Juan Hostel was very nice and again we had the place to ourselves (another pattern?).
Leon has a fab art museum and is a small and easily walkable town. Karen had been there before and still managed to get us lost a few time.
Leon was quite hot and we started the siesta habit.
We had decided that we would each spend 30 Cordoba ($USD1.50)and buy each other christmas presents but they had to be small enough to fit in our already bulging backpack. I got Jus a Nica neck strap for her camera and for Karen two small jars on coffee (for those who know Karen, they will understand that coffee is important and we do not move until she has had at least 2!). Jus got me a fan, brilliant as i had been saying that i must buy one as it is very warm on the chicken buses when they stop. Jus got Karen washing powder and pens, quite funny cos Karen was always washing and swore there was shortage of pens in Nica. Karen got me a Salsa CD (bootleg of course!) and a small drinking thimble. Karen got Jus some postcards and also a small drinking thimble.
Life is hot!
