Started out the day by visiting Checkpoint Charlie. This was the checkpoint leaving the west to enter the east. Great little museum here. Just down the street I visited the museum of the wall. Kinda neat but kinda pricey for such a short visit. Went to the Topography of Terror. This was a heavy exhibit about the Nazi party's reign of terror in Europe. Very hard to digest. I decided I needed to cheer up and have some fun so I took a walk down to the festival. Totally crazy crowded. I decided to cut the visit short since the bands hadn't started playing yet and went to the German Resistance Memorial.
This memorial had some great stories of people who organized coops against the Nazis and planned to assassinate Hitler. Such brave and daring souls. I was so worn out from so much reading but you feel you need to acknowledge every part and every voice.
Next, I headed back towards the festival and stopped to see the holocaust memorial. This was heart wrenching. It's starts out as this outdoor area of large columns. It's filed with cute little kids playing hide and seek. It was lite hearted. Then you go underground. The part that was hardest to handle was the display of handwritten letters and poems that were discovered in the concentration camps. The goodbyes to loved ones, the details of the things they've seen - it was hard to keep it together. I'm glad I came here first before Auschwitz. Though I don't know how ill do. I guess we'll see.
