Oxford, Stratford Upon Avon, and Warwick Castle
Entry 4 of 6 | show all | print this entry |

Early this morning was the massive explosion at Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal in Hemel Hempstead. The sky was smoky and people were talking about hearing the boom in the early morn. It was quite the beginning of our day.
So we started off again at Victoria Station, and again it was freezing ass cold. Brrrrr.
Since another tour to the Cotswolds was cancelled, some of those people took our tour, and we were able to drive through the Cotswolds on our way to Oxford. When we got off the bus in Oxford, the town looked really cool--very old, misty, and it was bone-chillingly cold. As we walked through through the streets learning about the university and its history, the sun finally made it's way out and took the chill off.
From Oxford, we headed to Stratford-upon-Avon, a lovely town known, of course, as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. We toured his house and garden, and then DH and I had a nice lunch in one of the cafes. We walked through the town of half-timbered buildings, and then I made a mad dash through a little antique market where I bought an 18th century print before boarding the bus.
Our last stop was Warwick Castle. It is known as the finest medieval castle in England and was built on the banks of the River Avon. The castle was built by King William I in 1068, so it was VERY old. This castle was cool, but sort of like an amusement park. It depicted life at the castle during different centuries with mannequins dressed in period clothing and furniture for each era in various sections of the castle. The views were great from the high points of the castle. In the middle they had ice skating.
The trip back to London was long as the highway was bogged down because of closure from the explosion. I did take my contact case this time, so we caught some much needed sleep. ZZZZZZzzzzz
